Treasure Box #2

$2,750.00

Treasure Box is an exploration of structure and form; A two-tier nesting teabox made of New England Black Walnut which is exquisitely engraved on all four-sides with traditional Japanese illustration in the tradition of Nanga. During the Edo period in Japan (~1600-1868) after centuries of civil war and unrest, a type of painting known as "Nanga" was wildly popular, which translates to "Southern Painting". The capital of government was in the North, and so "southern style" refers to a type of painting that moves as far away from government and politics as possible. These Nanga paintings were dream-like idyllic landscapes with waterfalls and trees and beautiful mountains, which allowed the viewer to mentally escape, even if for only a moment, from the harsh reality with which they lived for so long. I have been fascinated by these beautiful idyllic landscapes and wanted to try to illustrate one myself. Hiding inside are ceilings inlaid in the Asanoha pattern in brass or black epoxy, black walnut liners and sold brass bar dividers. Finished in food safe shellac. Approximate dimensions 8” x 8” x 8”.
