Ventana Fish Scale Board
Ventana Fish Scale Board
What a ride, I'm gonna miss this one. š± @ventanasurfboards challenged me to make a themed sushi board that will accompany their 100th custom reclaimed surfboard!!!! What an honor. They sent me laser cut fish scales which match the surf perch fish scales on their 100th board and told me to tear it up. I happen to have this stunning piece of shipwreck White Oak with an enormous crotch figure in the middle of it from my friend @ddouyardchairmaker. This board sat at the bottom of the Hudson River for a century as part of a shipwreck, imparting an intense black gradient at the edges. I separated the fish scales (my daughter's idea!) so that they looked like a school of fish and that the crotch looked like turbulent waters behind them. Also inlaid a few with some brass accents. I turned the bowl from a piece of salvaged black walnut and ebonized it with the vinegar and steel wool solution. Finished it off with matching white oak chopsticks, and a custom Chopstick holder that reflects the fish scale shape created by Martijn at Ventana. The challenge of using only reclaimed woods for this project, and the custom fish scales (reclaimed from @santacruzguitar cut-offs) , and relating it all to surfboards really pushed me into new creative spaces. What a fabulously enjoyable project. Thank you for such a wonderful commission!
