Ventana Fish Scale Board #2
Ventana Fish Scale Board #2
I have the BEST customers! While we were out in Santa Cruz, CA at the Capitola Art & Wine festival, Lily and Peter @peter_hester_design visited the @ventanasurfboards tent and noticed the sushi board I made a few months ago for Ventana from a board rescued from a century-old shipwreck in the Hudson River (generously shared by my buddy @ddouyardchairmaker). Unfortunately that sushi board had already sold and at the moment all I could offer them was to do another commission piece in a similar style, as I happen to have one more board (!) from the same shipwreck. But as we all know, no two pieces of wood are the same so we would just have to take a look at it and see what we get; work with its unique characteristics, whatever they reveal to be. Lily and Peter understood, and put huge trust in me commissioning this board on the spot and leaving with nothing other than a promise.
I'm hugely EXCITED💥 to reveal this board to them and relieved that it turned out to be every bit as unique as the first one!! With a beautiful ebony bow tie theme, a hammered brass fish scale leads a school of laser cut fish scales designed by the FABULOUS @ventanasurfboards from mahogany, bloodwood, figured walnut, and East Indian rosewood cut-offs from @santacruzguitar. The soy bowl was turned from a piece of salvaged black walnut and ebonized with a vinegar and steel wool solution. Finished it off with matching white oak /wenge chopsticks with brass pips, and custom Ebony bowtie chopstick holders. Osmo Top-oil used as a finish. Thank you so much you guys!!!
